Slab-draped porcelain coupe style plate decorated with a snake motif for this Year of the Snake. Each snake is hand-etched and filled with blue slip using the inlay technique.
Small plates measure approximately 7-3/4" diameter and 1" tall. Share plates measure approximately 9-1/2" diameter and 1" tall.
Microwave and dishwasher safe. The underside of the plates are unglazed. While staining is unlikely on the unglazed region, regular washing (especially in the dishwasher!) will keep them pristine.
This Lunar New Year celebrates the Wood Snake. Snakes are known for being mysterious, intuitive, adept at transformation, and wise. The wood element for 2025 emphasizes creativity and imagination—a freeing theme for designing the line work for this collection.
You’ll find one of two motifs on the bodies of the snakes: peonies or lingzhi (reishi mushrooms) with butterflies on both. Butterflies represent transformation and mutual affinity when paired with flowers. Peonies seemed like a natural choice for the New Year because they represent riches and wealth. The second motif is made of reishi mushrooms, a sort of cure-all in Chinese medicine—their depictions in art have come to symbolize longevity and even immortality.
Compounding longevity (and happiness) is the symbol of the Buddha’s hand citrus. We love this because there’s a mirroring of the shedding of skin between citrus and snake.
